How much VRAM is enough for me?

Hi, so I've been building my infinitely awesome PC config, and I've got everything already planned, including the GPU, but I'm having second thoughts.

I originally wanted to do gtx 970 in 2x SLI, but I'm then the whole 3.5GB thing came along, I started thinking about the potential annoyance of SLI configs. I decided to get it anyway, but just when I was going to buy it, the gtx 980ti came out.

After a lot of obsessive thinking, comparisons and looking at OC benchmarks...

(I could overclock a single gtx 970 to perform at the speed of the 980, but does that mean that you could overclock 970x2 to perform like 980x2? Assuming you could, I can just take a look at some benchmarks comparing the 980x2 with the 980ti... Wait a sec, I don't know the max stable overclock of the 980ti. I'll just OC it to the level of the Titan X. OK, let's take a look. 970x2 looks like it's the better option. Wait, but what if the performance level of the Titan x isn't the max stable OC you could achieve with the 980ti? Arrghhh!!! I could compare different benchmarks, but I don't know if the settings are the same... See what I'm dealing with here?)

...I decided to go with the 980ti. But since the 970x2 is likely better performing, there is no reason to get the gtx 980ti instead of 970x2, except for a higher amount of VRAM, less stuttering and upgradability. I'm not gonna buy a new GPU for a very long time and stuttering only really becomes a problem at 3x SLI. So the only difference is VRAM. Here are the settings I'm going to play at:

-144hz (so 60+ FPS isn't the max I'm gonna use)

-4x MFAA (looks like 8x, but has the performance hit of 4x), or 2x if the game is very demanding and I'm unable to play at 75+FPS.

-max settings (on every game, except the ones with AMD "optimized" features)

-1080p (and maybe 4k DSR if I'm playing a low-detail game like Minecraft).

Is 3.5GB (I know there's 4GB and it annoys me when people say 3.5 but I'm not willing to play with the decreased performance of the last memory chunk)

Can I play at these settings with 3.5GB for the next 3 years or so? I heard some games today already use a lot of VRAM, even at 1080p. 6GB seems like a bit of an overkill, so I'm really hoping 3.5GB is enough. Is it?

Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad English!

Update: just saw the news: "AC Syndicate system requirements revealed, 3GB required for 1080p"

Some newer games require like 3gb for 1080p, 3 years later will probably be a lot more, and no SLI is generally bad unless you are going mad in configs. 980Ti comes extremely close to performance so I would suggest you go for it instead of the hassle of a 970 SLI.

one single more powerful card is usually the better choice over 2 lower end cards in sli. not all games support sli, not to mention it can have issues, and vram doesnt stack.

the 980ti is absolutely the best choice between those 2 options. especially if you plan to some day upgrade to 4k.
