Skylake/Haswell cpu question

Hi there,
I'm looking to build a gaming PC (I'm not upgrading, I don't currently have a pc). I don't know whether to go for a Haswell cpu (i5 4590 in this case, as I don't plan to overclock) or get one of the newer i5 6500/6600 cpu's (again, not the unlocked versions). I've read that the haswell chips are slightly better for gaming, but would the benefits of a z170 board (and ddr4 ram) give the skylake an advantage?

like you see with that win 10 - what a joke

but I think the slight difference between haswell and skylake should not be a major factor or issue and what don't have a bug or 2 old or new ?? I mean really ddr4 support is the only real thing you get

but I also feel if buying new I try to stick with whats new hardware wise and them weigh out at what cost for what real gain ?? I don't see where a haswell is going to hurt any and will do all you want today

the if you were to want ddr4 memory the skylake I don't see going skylake and ddr3 ? the point to that would be to use the ddr4 ??

overall the upgrade path with intel is small not a leap and bound real world difference

so in the end to me its 50% of one or half of the other [opinion]

look at how many folks still happily running a old sandy rig???

I would go the Skylake route. The Intel Gen 6 CPU + DDR4 RAM will give you a slight boost, but not much. As the system matures, there MAY be additional performance advantages provided by BIOS updates, chipset driver updates, etc.

The main reason that I like Skylake is the extra features on the mobo, like M.2 SATA and USB 3.1. There are prolly more, but those are just from a quick skim of the specs for this board. You may be able to find these features on a Haswell board, but it will prolly be a high spec board with a high price.

all comes down to what features you want or if necessary to what you want to do. just looking at ddr3 and 4 memory the price gap is not so great

so that most times a factor with new lines of memory -- that makes skylake a bit more appealing

so back to what I said above '' I also feel if buying new I try to stick with whats new hardware wise''

I wouldn't say I'm splitting hairs, it's a lot of money to spend in one go, and I want to make sure I get the best value for it. I'm always wary of brand new hardware, especially when reviews are scarce (of the 6600 at least), maybe I shouldn't be though :)

I did a little more checking. HERE (LINK) is Intel's comparison chart of the i5 4590 (Haswell), i5 4690K (Unlocked Devil's Canyon, also called Haswell Refresh) and the i5 6600 (Skylake).

If you aren't sure what some of the technology titles mean, just left click on the title and it will bring up an explanation box.

I noticed another important difference which I was not aware of. Skylake supports DX 12 while, apparently, Haswell and Devil's Canyon do not. I was under the impression that Haswell or DC + Windows 10 would support DX 12, but maybe not.

thanks Y0GI, but does the dx 11/dx 12 not refer to the integrated graphics only? so if i have dedicated graphics it shouldn't matter (assuming that there's ever a game which requires dx 12)

You could be right. I hadn't thought of it that way. Like I said, I thought that it was a Windows 10 thing.

Somebody will be along here shortly to set me straight.

My thoughts exactly!

I was tempted by the "Free" upgrade, but I've just seen way too many ppl having problems, especially driver issues.
