Ok so here's the scoop. My performance on minecraft had already been stuttering a little bit in the past, but it was nothing I couldn't ignore and keep playing. However, recently when I log on to play minecraft I have noticed very severe stuttering to the point where it is almost impossible to just ignore it and keep playing. The only things that I have changed since not having as much stuttering is that I have overclocked my CPU by an additional 0.1 GHz and added more mods to the game.
These aren't dips in fps because the game will say that I am playing at about 80 fps most of the time, and the fps counter on fraps agrees. This is where the game's behaviour starts to get a little weird. Turning down all the video settings to the very minimum gets me very smooth gameplay at around 350 fps, so my first thought was that I am losing a percentage of my frames to a poorly synchronised monitor.
However, this only happens when I touch the smooth lighting, mipmap or anisotropic filtering settings. When I have all three off, I can turn up all the other settings including graphics and render distance and still get perfectly smooth gameplay. I can even turn on shaders which brings me all the way down to around 30 fps and still get no stuttering whatsoever. No frames lost. Turning mipmap and filtering up gets me a little bit of stuttering when I dip to 60 fps, nothing too noticeable. As soon as I touch smooth lighting though.. Boom. Severe stuttering.
My memory usage during stutter is 30% overall and 11% of the allocated RAM in-game, CPU 14%, which is the same as when I'm not stuttering. GPU loads seem normal too. I suspect that this is something to do with my CPU, since smooth lighting, mipmap and anisotropic filtering all sound like CPU intensive settings. I have an AMD FX-8370E overclocked to 4.3 GHz. I knew AMD CPUs were bad, but I never could have imagined they'd be this bad. Tsk tsk, shame on you AMD, I only bought your products because I felt sorry for you being outmatched by all your competitors .
So now, the question is, is there any way to remedy this stuttering? This build is fairly new, so I would very much prefer not to buy any new parts just yet. I experience no stuttering in more modern games that require higher specs, so surely there must be a way to make minecraft perform more optimally.
My PC specs, if they matter:
FX-8370E @ 4.3 GHz
MSI 990FXA Gaming
MSI R9 390 Gaming Edition
Samsung 850 Pro SSD
1200W Seasonic Platinum
Thank you very much for reading. Any help is appreciated.
