at the moment, the xfx is priced at around 270 USD with 30 IMR and the Sapphire is only 220 USD with 20 IMR... which one should i go with?

Solution

The reference cooler is loud and inefficient, which leads to it running hot (95c) and it throttles to keep it from overheating. I would not get the reference cooler, you wont get the best or full performance from it. As for the XFX, the 290 performs equal to the GTX 970, yet looks to be a bit cheaper here.

I'd say get the XFX 290 as long as it's a XFX custom cooler. Or I guess you could buy the Sapphire and a GPU cooler to replace the reference one, but that will void the...
Depends on the cooler, if the Sapphire is the reference cooler, get the XFX. If it's an actual Sapphire custom cooler, the Sapphire is the obvious choice. I would never recommend getting a 290/290X with that reference cooler!

Which begs the question...what models are you looking at? (links please)

Probably not saving any money doing that though, just losing the warranty. The reference cooler is probably so cheap just to get rid of the stock.
