Built a new PC and now it won't turn on

Hi All! I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I've built my first PC, and it worked fine for an hour, got Windows installed and all, but then I left and came back after another hour, and while the power was on it wouldn't show anything on the monitor. So I shut it off, and then it wouldn't boot up again at all. I can see the green light on the motherboard, but when I press the power button nothing happens. No whirring, beeping, or activity of any sort.

Here are all the bits I've put into this:

Motherboard: Asus H170-Pro
(side question - no beeping whatsoever even with no RAM in, does this mean there is no onboard speaker on this MB? can't seem to find the answer to this anywhere)

CPU: Intel Core I5-6600

RAM: 2x 4 gb Kingston Fury DDR 4

Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 970

PSU: EVGA 500W

Stock cooler

I've tried hooking my PSU up to my second older PC and it powers up fine, so the PSU definitely works. I've tried clearing the CMOS (not sure it actually happens since the power button yields no discernable result) and removing and replacing the mobo battery and neither of those did anything. The RAM is in securely, I've triple checked that. All connections are nice and snug. Even tried using the power button from my second PC to check if that was the problem, to no avail.

I accidentally applied too much conduction paste to the CPU (none got on the mobo) so I cleaned that thoroughly and reapplied a smaller amount.

I've already gone through the checklist of reasons this is happening and can find nothing else to fix. I've hit a wall. Any advice?

Solution
Hi, If leaving only the 24 pin power cable and a case fan connected to the motherboard and starting the board, does the case fan spin?
If not, then it looks like a motherboard issue and I suggest RMA-ing it.

That was really helpful, thank you very much - I did not think of that.
As you said, still nothing happened. Will return the motherboard rightaway - when I get a new one, I will update this thread in case it gets solved.
