Hello everyone i have been trying to preload Fallout 4 onto my SSD. However, I do not have enough space. This is odd because i only have LoL and windows 10 installed on my SSD. So i checked and it says i have almost 50 gigs of temporary files. So when i go to settings / System / Storage / C: / Temporary Files, i click delete temporary files and it just says "We're cleaning up your temporary files. Come back in a bit to check out the results." But it doesn't do anything. I let it sit for an hour and nothing was deleted. Still at 47.6 gigs. I really would appreciate any help.

A. Temp files

1. Right Click on C:\ in Windows Explorer
2. Select "File Finder:
3. Type in "*.tmp" without the quotes ofc
4. When ya get the list of files, click on the date column header so it ranks them by oldest at top. Delete them in small bunches of 20 or so. It's as if to delete files, it needs empty space in proportion to the size of the files being deleted. In some cases, divvying up the load seems to help.
5. Do not delete any with dates / times newer than your last reboot.

B. Rinse and repeat with *.dmp files

C. Reboot and then try Disk cleanup again and make sure to clea up system files such as old WU and KB uninstalls.

D. Open Event viewer and delete system / application / security log files after going over recenbt days of reports and m,akiing sure nuttin that you are worried about

E. Us file finder again on *.* and this time rank by size.... see if there are any bigmuthas in there like a movie you forgot was there.

F. Cleanout and never use again any folder with a "My" in front of it like "My Downloads.

G. Uninstall programs and when you reinstall them, chnage the location from C:\Program Files to something on the HD that makes more sense.

Still a 120 GB HD has 111.76 GB of file space cause they been lying about storage size (using base 10 numbers instead of base 2 as appropriate) for about 20 years. Now set aside 15% as recommended for free space. That leaves you with about 95 GB. Now figure even astute windows users have their footprints grow to about 70 GB footprint. That leaves you just 25 GB

Of stop worrying about all that stuff leave Windows on ya SSD and get a 2 TB SSHD for gaming :)

I am a big fan of Ccleaner and the other Piriform products, tho they are perhaps too powerful for novice users who can easily get themselves into trouble. For the no-techie types I oft recommend Steven Goulds Cleanup utility which, especially for the youngins, is a bit more *fun* and harder to hurt yaself with.

But CCleaner is no different really than using Windows Disk Cleaner, Steven Gould's Cleanup, etc. as it just tells the OS what do. It is a bit more automated and "hands free" which is good for the techie but perhaps risky for the novice. In the beginning I also think there's value to using disk cleaner as I think it's more evident exactly what you are doing and adding things to clean seems a bit more daunting as opposed to "check all these, we'll take care of it".

Be that as it may, if the HD doesn't have enough space, it can be difficult to wipe large amounts of files. The utilities don't let you tackle little bits of the job at a time which is what, it seems, is stopping him. If Disk cleaner is not removing his tmp files, as CC just initiates the same action, don't see how using an auto scripting utility to initiate those actions will help. When a box arrives here with a request from a user to 'clean out his C:\ drive .... the same user I lectured about NOT installing a weeeny little SSD, I of course started with cc, but sometimes had to resort to tackling chunks at a time and than with some room created, normal modes worked again.

Utilities also won't recognize that you have 60 Gigs of anime mp4s on your drive :)

Prolly just cache files since ya last logged on.

Something is not letting you delete large amounts of files. It's like your banging a nail in with a hammer and it won't go in.... using a different hammer isn't likely to change much. US the manual method described above and try just deleting 1 file ... if it doesn't, you should get a reason why. If it does, try 2, if it does try 5, if it does try 10 ....
