Recently got an old, square Sony monitor off a friend, tried rigging it up to my current set-up (1 ViewSonic 1080p monitor), and the second monitor just will not be detected by my PC (or graphics card, I don't know). Please help, if you need any more information, don't hesitate to ask below! Thanks.

Yep. It's the wrong adapter. Not sure why they even make a a passive dvi-d to vga adapter as they are worthless. Dvi-d carries no analog signal so it requires an active converter to go from dvi-d(digital) to vga (analog). This is what you need.
