TL;DR : So the question posed is can I replace my Radeon 5770 with a GTX 960 while keeping the same 460W PSU? From what I can find it seems my GPU is 108W and the one in question is 120W.

Title says it all. I have a Dell XPS 8300 with a 5770 Radeon series GPU that idles at 70 degrees Celsius and peaks @ over 100 under load. I have cleaned the entire case, I have taken apart and cleaned the gpu and I have redone the thermal paste. The next step seems to be to get rid of it.

I soon plan to build my own monster computer, but not quite yet. So right now I need to fix this GPU problem in a way that tides me over for a year or two.. or more.

The plan is to replace my current GPU with a "ASUS STRIX GeForce GTX 960 Overclocked 4 GB", everything I know about computers tells me I should upgrade the PSU first (currently 460W) but I have been told that due to the nature of Dell prebuilts, I need to upgrade the motherboard if I am to upgrade the PSU. Now if I upgrade the motherboard, I don't want to cheap out so theres about 100$ there plus 100$ to rebuy my OS. If I go this far I may as well just build the whole damn thing.

Thus leading me back to the TL;DR, can I replace my GPU with a 12W higher GPU while keeping my 460W PSU?

Just because i had an issue on my prebuilt pc by HP, imma let ya know something!

I had an amd 7450 gpu and wanted to upgrade to a better one.
I bought a sitty psu for 50 dolars, while i was thinking its good because of the brand and the wattage (coolermaster 600w elite series)!
Whatever i was ready for the gpu! I bought a monster (besides the old gpu) GF 750ti by msi!
I installed it and booted up once! Then it never happened to boot up giving me no singal! My Motherboard didn't support it ! This retarted HP somehow locked the motherboard and doesn't accept other gpus? Idk thats what they told me.
I got my money back but the point is BECAREFUL with pre built PCs!!!
