Okay, so lets start at the beginning.

A couple years back I built my own computer, and at the time I was really happy with. Still, over the years the computer is serving most of my needs. However, with the improvements in gaming graphics, my computer is starting to fall off. Which is no shame, seeing as it could keep up for atleast 5 years.

Now, I feel its time to start replacing some hardware parts seeing as I can't run the latest modern games. Over the past few days I've been searching the internet on what to look for as I completly forgot what to look for. That's where you guys fill in.

I use my computer mostly for gaming, all the other tasks I want to do I am still able to do with my current set-up so I feel I shouldnt focus on any other task. I'm not a big time fanatic gamer who runs everything on ultra high graphics and what not, but I do however wanna buy a new set-up which should keep me satisfied for atleast the next 3 years. A couple months back i already bought a new graphics-card which is a AMD RADEON R9 280x. I bought it at the time in order to play GTA-5, but i'm still not able to play it properly due to a lack in CPU performance.

Now im looking to upgrade my CPU and everything that comes with it.
I'm aware of the fact that when I wanna buy a new CPU, im also gonna need a new motherboard, most likely more power supply and new RAM aswell, but I feel as if I should start by looking at a decent cpu first and then adjust my preferences to that.

It has come down to this,
After some time of searching i've found that I should be looking at core i5 processors, instead of i7.
seeing as the only difference was hyper threading, which isnt used in modern gaming. And now i've basically narrowed down my search to these 2 processors:

The

Intel® Core i5-4670, 3,4 GHz (3,8 GHz Turbo Boost) 1150 processor
Intel® Core i5-6500, 3,2 GHz (3,6 GHz Turbo Boost) 1151 processor

and my biggest question is, should i go for the skylake architecture or the haswell architecture?
I can't seem to figure out which of the 2 would be better for my preferences.

Keep in mind that I'm basically starting from scratch, seeingas my current computer still has a cpu i've bought about 5 years ago.

If there are any other processors which would better suit my needs, dont hestitate to list them.
Oh! and last but not least, I'm willing to spend some money, but I dont thousands of euro's to spend. So price is of essence aswell

Kind regards,

If you are buying new components, there's really no justification going to a discontinued socket over one that isn't (yet). Go with the i5-6500. Btw, it's Skylake, not Skyfall.

Realistically, when buying a new system I wouldn't worry about future-proofing it. If you have any system more than about 3-4 years, you will almost certainly have to upgrade most, if not all, of the components anyways. The only thing I would really worry about when buying a new system is: (1) Does it have at least 2 PCIe x8 slots? (2) Does it have USB 3.0? (3) Get at least 16GB of memory.
Everything else only gives you the smallest incremental amount of performance gains. Invest the extra money into the best graphics card you can afford -- that ALWAYS gives you the best bang for the buck.
Skylake is a great architecture, but really only gives you significant advantages for video transcoding and power efficiency. Gaming performance, all other things being equal, is only a few percentage points higher, but will cost you a quite a bit more -- money that you should put into the graphics card. However, you DEFINITELY want to stick with an Intel i3 or i5 processor!
