OS: Windows 7 Home Premium

It seems as if the RAM is in sets of three and their are currently 2 sets of 3 sticks of 1 GB RAM and I was looking to upgrade. I have found that the motherboard is compatible with either 1066 or 1333 DDR3 but was wondering if I can buy a set of two and leave one slot open out of the six in total or is it necessary to buy in groups of 3? Thank you for help.

It looks like you got a Studio XPS 435 there?

Uses Tripe Channel Ram.

if it best if you get ANOTHER set of 3 match sticks of ram to keep the PC in Triple channel mode. will it work if you only put in 2? Yes but it not reccomened. It is always best to put memory in sets and to fill up each memory channel.

DDR4 (at least for low end boards) is different since they have one slot per channel VS 2 like you have here allowing it to be easier to upgrade, but it be BEST if you get 3 sticks. Maybe a 6Gb set (3 x 2GB's) or get another 3 x 1GB set. Also get DDR 1333. Not sure what speed your current ram is but if it is 1333 getting 1066 will bring it down to 1066 where as if you get 1333 and have 1333 it stays the same or if you already have 1066 the new stuff gets bumped down to 1066.
