USB 3.0 HDD same speed on USB 2 and USB 3. WHY?

Toshiba Basics 2TB External USB 3.0 5400RPM Hard Drive.
Bought a few days back. No other problems at all.

I get the same speed, 25-28MB/s on my USB 2.0 ports and USB 3.0 ports.
They are wired up correctly

Thoughts?
I don't want to request a replacement or claim warranty, unless really required as I need my hard drive for the next few days.

your drive isnt coming close to using usb 2 port. just because you have a faster port dosn't mean that hdd will read and write data faster.

Cheap cable that isn't accessing it as USB3 (had this issue with Seagate drives), or your USB3 drivers aren't installed.

Isn't that devious marketing? I'm copying videos and photographs, I imagined at least 50-60. Pity
How would I go about updating my USB drivers? I've never had to do that

Information above is incorrect - I have a Toshiba basics drive here & its sitting at 68mbs on large file transfers with no problems.

Try a different cable , try a different port - preferentially one of the rear ones .

I'm using the Cable that came with the Drive
I've tried both USB 3.0 Ports on my Computer

I'll use have to buy another cable if I have to try a new one.
Should I update my USB Drivers?

You are stick at USB2 speeds at the moment no doubt at all.

Ill have to open my Cabinet, for the love of me I can't remember.
Gigabyte I think, but I know for a fact that it has two USB 3.0 ports on the back (Both in Blue)

If you are seeing 25-28MBps on the USB 2.0 port, moving to 3.0 won't help. 2.0 tops out at 40MBps, which you aren't at. You can try upgraded drivers, but you might be seeing the fastest that drive can do.

I've never seen above 30 MB/s on USB 2.0, even with devices that can go faster.

The drivers are worth a look into. For continuous, large file transfers (something like videos), you should be seeing more than that. For many, smaller files, probably not.

maybe try enabling write caching on the device (in Hardware > Properties)? see if it might help abit.

I wouldn't enable write caching on an external drive - it leaves too much margin for file loss & partition table errors if theres sudden power loss.

What os are you running??

I'll say now I use teracopy personally, its free & seems to offer better sustained copying/moving speeds between devices & also file pause/resume options.

Free software ,no ads or junk , easily settable as main copying process in any windows version, easy to disable/re-enable.

May make no difference but there's no reason not to try it.
