i have a 1090t at base clocks on asus m5a990 fx pro r2 with 24 gb 1600 mhz hyperx memory and a asus gtx 770 2gb video card. is it worth upgrading the cpu? i plan on upgrading my video card in the future but now much else at the moment. is it really worth the expense, or should i just keep the old power house of a cpu?

If the 1090 is on base clocks I would focus on overclocking as your motherboard is capable. Im not sure as mentioned above that the 8350 is goiing to last you that long but it should last a while longer than the 1090t but if you overclock the 1090 as far as you can and hold on for a completely new setup later on you might simply be better off in the future.

With a good cooler that cpu can see 4Ghz, the extra 800Mhz might just do the trick for you. I can assure you that your fps will see an excellent boost

Try that first. The cpu should be 25 percent faster if you hit 4Ghz, thats quite a bit faster and it will allow you to better keep up to your gpu.

Here is a pretty decent guide...
Well it is a good cpu, way faster than the 1090t. Not to mention that your mobo is good enough to handle a solid overclock in the future if you really desire, so you could get some 3-4 years from that CPU on top level, no doubt. Also as long as the new GPU is not way more powerful than a gtx 980Ti, the fx-8370 won't bottleneck it even one bit.

Everyone is very cautious with the overclocking temps saying mid 50 is safe, no its ideal safe is below 72C at absolute full load stress testing,

Higher temps will degrade the silicon but that takes a while, years even, the chips will shut down when the get to hot, if you dont plan on running it for another 3 years drive the voltage to it, let the temps be a little high at load 75 even, you will seldomly hit full load while strictly gaming.

I say this only in passing, make sure you read up and take small steps figure out what you are doing first but Im saying once you sort it out and have it under control, push it, remember that cpu isnt going to last you forever.
