Internet speeds very slow on one computer

My computer has recently been experiencing very slow speeds (on average around 50bytes/sec) where maybe every 10minutes it lets me access a webpage. This happened out of the blue and I have no idea what is going on.

Things I've tried:

- Replaced the network card
- Ran a virus scan
- Uninstalled virus software

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Johnny.

Worried security wise about disabling the firewall. Will it provide a permanent solution or is it to isolate the issue?

I'm connected via Wi-Fi just like my other computer which works fine

Thanks for the response.

I am talking about doing it temporarily. If you disable it and the speeds increase then it means your firewall is blocking something so we can have a look at the settings and sort it out. If it doesn't change then it points towards a hardware problem.

Local interference from other wireless devices is one cause of intermittent troubles. Sources include neighbors on wifi, cordless phones, baby monitors, microwave ovens and etc. One of the best ways to address this is to log into the router and change to a fixed channel from among 1, 6, & 11 on 2.4 GHz to see if the problem stops. Even if none of these apply to you, change the channel anyway.

You have implied that it affects one of at least two computers. The problem may be related to the difference in the distance/obstructions between the computers and the router. If the channel change doesn't help, temporarily relocate machine and the router next to each other. Work back from that point until you have more clarity on what is contributing to the problem.

I disabled my firewall and the connection does seem to work a lot better but not as good as it used to be.

Changes like you describe can be caused by failed or broken automatic updates in Windows. The steps in that case would be to go the the card manufacturer's site and download the latest driver. Don't just use Windows to find the driver. If that does not help, then roll back Windows to a restore point before the problem started. Keep hunting and you can solve this. Good luck
