Does PWM-fans need software to control speed?

Solution
No, most motherboard BIOS will allow you to configure 3 or 4 pin fans.

You should look up your motherboard manual / specifications and see how many 4 pin fan headers it has. If it doesn't have enough for what you are planning, you have a few options.

-Plug some of the fans into 3 pin fan headers. They will either always run at 100% speed or have a couple speed settings in the BIOS (depending on motherboard).

-Buy 4 pin splitters to connect multiple fans to one header. You should again check the motherboard manual to see the maximum wattage or amps the fan headers are rated for so you don't fry the header.

Or get something like this...

which allows 3 4 pin PWM fans to connect to one header but pulls power from a SATA connection instead. There's a 5 fan version as well. Note that this will not be able to regulate speeds of 3 pin fans.
