My budget isn't really decided yet, as this is my research phase 
I am thinking pretty high end, something from the GTX 9-series for sure. Any thoughts on what would be a balanced choice?

The GTX 970 is a good choice for around £250. The R9 390 is also a good choice with more VRAM for around the same price.
