just finished the steps of my build with everything but the GPU and ran my first test fire, everything seemed to be working. Case fans were going, motherboard lighted up, stock cpu fan was going. Monitor screen came on but I couldn't access the BIOS. What do I need to do?

A couple of first things to look for:
1) Look in your motherboard manual for which key press to access the BIOS when you first boot up
2) Make sure your keyboard is plugged in to a USB 2.0 port, sometimes 3.0 isn't supported until you update the motherboard drivers.

I will agree with the 1st answer but 2nd is questionable. Some motherboards need to use ps2 connector if not it wont recognize the keyboard until drivers are updated.
I had to do this for a mouse and keyboard.. which was dumb but found it at goodwill for $3 each.
