I'm getting an i7-4790k, however I was wondering if this will be a good enough CPU to last several years with Pascal coming out in 2016 and such, or should I just go ahead and invest in a skylake CPU.

Solution
My sons gaming computer is a 7 year old AMD Quad Core Phenom II. It is overclocked to 4Ghz, and in it's day was a very fast processor. Technology has moved on, and it is now therefore roughly equivalent to a fast Haswell i3. It is still fine for gaming, but will probably need to be replaced soon
If you buy an i7-4790k, you will probably still be happily using it in 5-7 years time.
Heck, I expect my build to still be good in 5 years time....

My 2700K is almoust 5 years old and it is still kicking. Clocked at 4.2 GHz - it does not fall too far back behind 4790k/6700k.

Consumer CPUs are moving very slowly for the past 5 years. Things might stir up a bit after Zen hits - but don't expect any leaps like Core2 and Sandy did. So - you should be pretty fine for the next few years.
