So im set to buy a Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 but it says that it needs at least a 500w psu. so i went to pcpartpicker and i mapped out my current build and if i put that gpu in, my total is 404w with keyboard and mouse and everything. I have a 430w psu. (yes i know its not that much) The question is do i need a 500w psu to run this card? or should i just go with the pcpartpicker that says i only need 404w to run the entire system?

Yes, you need a 500w MINIMUM PSU to run that card properly. Anything less just wont power the card or could ruin the PSU. I would recommend getting a 550w.
Another vote for getting a better/higher PSU.
Do not cheap out on PSU, it just like a heart inside your body, choose brand like Corsair, Antec, XFX, OCZ. They're maybe a little bit more expensive from any other brand but they give you quality. :)
