System specs are-
i7 4790k @ 4.20ghz stock speed
MSI Gaming 7 Motherboard
MSI gtx 980 oc graphics card
8gb of ddr3 ram

My issue is that when i play graphically demanding games, often my frame rate will drop and game begin to stutter after a certain amount of time passes.
Noticed first in the Witcher 3, it would once in a blue moon drop to a steady 30fps... which i thought was odd but fixes itself with a quick restart- having an ssd this was a minor inconvenience. However i also found it happening in GTA V after maybe 30 minutes of playing, so i uninstalled that- but now I have Fallout 4 it seems to be alot more frequent and unavoidable of an issue in so far as that it only takes 20 mins gametime before i need to reset my computer and play again.

I honestly dont know what the problem is and cant think of how to find it... really hope i dont have to do a system reboot. .

Games slow down and stutter after time spent playing, fixed by restart of computer but only for that time. Any help would be appreciated.

Your problem is either down to your Cpu throttling back in speed to cope with to much heat. in order to help cool your cpu in the system.

Or that your GTX 980 OC card is also suffering from high heat build up after about 20 minuets of gaming depending on how demanding each game is of the Gpu on the GTX 980 card you have.

You should check the temperatures of both, to me it sounds like your graphics card is down clocking in Gpu core speed also due to a high heat build up of the Gpu.

Depending on what case you have. if you have the ability, or there is space to fit extra case fans you should do so.
This will help by drawing in more cold air but also expelling hot air generated by your GTX 980 card.

As a simple test to see if the problem is a lack of good air flow inside your case, heat build up inside the case.
Remove the side panel of your tower, or case.
Run a game of your choice and see if the system performs ok without any drastic frame rate drops when playing the game.

Then it`s pretty obvious what you need to do to resolve your current issue.
