Hi, this is my first PC build. I thought its time I built my own pc instead of a pre-made one.

I will be mainly using this rig for photo editing with the likes of Capture One and Photoshop and gaming triple A titles as well as Star CItizen! I feel the over clocked cpu will greatly benefit my photo work.

Depending the upcoming price drops with black friday coming up and all, I have made two builds, one is Skylake based and the other is Devil's Canyon based.

I am trying to get the best value for money from my build and whilst keeping costs down. I'll be planning to upgrade in 2 years or so anyway, so skylake or not its not a problem for the future.

I am currently rocking a 2012 Retina Macbook Pro that my parents got me for graduation. I have been spoiled by the retina display and I was wondering if there are any Monitor recommendations that can compete or be slightly below the retina display without breaking the bank. If there are any really nice 1080p, I would be open to that as well. The best would be sub £200, but I am open to suggestions.

Any advice or constructive criticism will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Looks good, I'd lean towards the newer skylake build and if budget allows I'd personally recommend going for an i7 if Photoshop is a big factor in your build. A lot of the more common filters love the multi-threading.

One hard choice you may have to look at for monitors is going to be if your build is primarily for your photo work (IPS) or gaming (TN) panel. IPS is going to give you much better color values, but they have a slower response time than TN panels. Even inexpensive TN panels will give you a 1ms response time, but the color reproduction is sorely lacking. First you need to figure out if you care more about photography in the build or the gaming, after that your monitor selection will at least be narrowed down.

in real world with ddr4 ram and the new encoders in the skylake cpu it going to be about 20 percent faster doing real world encoding over the older haswell. with haswell gone end of life and brodwell killed off. the 1150 slot is dead. wiith the newer mb there going to be curby lake and one other 1151 cpu for upgrade path for the newer mb. if you do go with haswell when you do the jump you have to replace the mb/cpu and ram. as it looks like you have a set build fund for the next few years hold off till 2016 for your build if you can or just the gpu purchase. both amd and nvidia have tapped out there next gpu cores and early in 2016 you may see them in retail.

Hey darknight,

First up congrats on the new build!

As azaran mentioned the new instruction sets in the skylake CPU would be more beneficial all around. I would also swap that PSU out as suztera said as I have read those aren't that great. I would urge you look into an i7 over an i5 as the hyper threading present on the i7 will really make a difference in photoshop. Not so much in gaming (although as games are becoming more sophisticated they are starting to leverage more CPU muscle) but multithreaded programs like Photoshop will certainly benefit A LOT from extra threads.

I realize I am kinda rehashing azaran's post here so I'll just shut up and agree with his points on the monitors. I will say that as someone who works with photoshop daily having accurate color reproduction will be the most important thing you would need in a monitor, especially if you are doing a lot of print work. I would strongly recommend looking into an IPS display, unfortunately they can be a bit pricy. Sorry I can not really reccomend a good IPS display, but I would definitely suggest doing some research before you buy as all monitors are not created equal. I really like "Linus Tech Tips" on youtube. He does a TON of unboxing videos and is usually pretty thorough in his reviews, especially on his reviews on monitors.

Hope this helped!
