So I am using windows 10 and I have googled this problem. Apparently lots of people are having this issue where nvidiabackend.exe is running in the background which causes high cpu usage for no reason. This is a problem.

How do you really fix this the correct way? I want updates but only when I ask the software to do that.

Solution
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\Update Core\ (or wherever you driver is installed) and rename NvBackend.exe to something like NvBackend.exe_old . Restart pc and you should be done. If it doesn't help, disable the service. This way you will not get auto updates however.

What if I go under services and change the setting from Automatic > Manual rather than "Disable"

Yeah, I ended up changing the name of the file which was located in that exact spot. I changed it to "NvBackend_old" restarted the PC and it's gone. Also I had to disable that in "Startup" options as well. Nvidia should get on this. This is stupid as crap. I mean there are users out there that don't have a great CPU and the usage could go all the way up to almost 90-100 % from what I've heard. Mine used to go up to 10-11 percent on idle for no reason. Glad I got rid of it.
