these are both am3 socket cpus. my question is about power. mobo is nforce 430 chipset and the Athlon xII 215 is a 65w cpu. the Phenom x4 is 95w. will this work or do I have to find a cpu with lower wattage?

If this is your PC: http://www.manualguru.com/hp/compaq-505b-microtower-pc/service-and-maintain
...it will handle the 95W Phenom II. You can see on page 2 that several Phenom II's are spec'd to work with that board. They only went up to the 945, but that may have been because the 955 wasn't out at that time. Both the 945 and the 955 came in 125W and 95W versions. http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/TYPE-Phenom%20II%20X4.html
Page 3 explains that newer BIOSs have been released over the years. If the Phenom doesn't initially work when you get it, you may have to update your board's BIOS to the latest one out so it recognizes the newer chip.
