My PC won't boot - it seems like the stock CPU cooling fan only runs intermittently. When I try swapping the CPU and system fan plugs (both 4 pin connections), it will boot (I only run it for a short time since the CPU fan isn't spinning), so I think the stock fan has gone bad.

From what I can tell, a lot of CPU coolers have replaceable fans. Unfortunately, the stock fan on my Intel G3258 appears to be part of the actual mounting bracket, so it looks like I'll have to replace the whole GPU cooler. Being a micro motherboard, there's not a whole lot of room for big coolers on there - any suggestions on what to get? I've never replaced a CPU cooler, so any help would be appreciated.

The easiest thing to do might be to get another complete stock cooler. They are available cheap from people who have upgraded. I have two spare ones lying around myself. The stock cooler is very stout with a decent copper slug in it.

Things may be more complex then they seem. What is your complete system.

Intel G3258 processor w/ stock fan
Gigabyte GA-Z97M-DS3H motherboard
Corsair Vengeance 2 x 4 GB DDR3-1600
ADADA Premier SP600 256GB 2.5" SSD
Sapphire Radeon R9 270X
Corsair CX500M PSU
Windows 10

This is for my wife's computer. I don't know if this is related or not, but over the past month or two (we built this PC six months ago) she's had problems getting the PC to wake up from sleep. It boots fine when it has been shut off, but when it has gone to sleep on its own it often won't wake up. Now, it won't boot at all. When I power it up, I can see that the other system fans start spinning immediately, but the CPU cooling fan spins for a few seconds, and then stops. Then it spins again, and stops. Then, it starts running full time. However, after the 2x starting & stopping, the system stops booting. It does that same pattern every time I try to boot up.

However, as I said when I swap the wires for the system and CPU fans, it will boot, so it seems to be the fan itself. I have no idea why it always repeats the 2x starting & stopping, though.

That's part of the boot process. AFAIK that's normal. My system behaves the same way. The fan runs only when it needs to cool the CPU, when the CPU is hot, and that goes up and down during the boot process.

If the fan will not run when connected to a System header, then something is wrong.

Replacing the cooler is easy. We do it at school a lot.

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO:

That's a USA link.

Suggested method:

1) Shut down system and unplug

2) Remove cooler and clean CPU area with 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol solution

3) use "pea method" and put 4-5mm ball of thermal paste in center of CPU

4) follow mounting instructions carefully

5) verify boot etc

6) Install fan software from motherboard site if it exists and setup a profile to optimize for noise/cooling.

Other:
1) Memtest for system memory www.memtest.org
2) CPU diagnostic: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool-64-bit-

The CPU diagnostic will stress the CPU to 100% so it will run hot. If it passes here there should be no issues.

3) Prime95: sometimes Memtest isn't perfect as the system can become unstable under more load (possible power supply issue). I wouldn't bother running this unless you have BSOD crashing.

Other:
If you have a friend with a modern computer that has a 4-pin fan connection that is WORKING (fan spinning) then you can attach the cooler fan to that then boot up the PC.

Use any case fan (the CPU fan can't be used). If your CPU fan spins then it's working so your MOTHERBOARD is the likely problem.
