Worth upgrading fully or just a couple components?

Had my gaming rig since Oct. of 13', debating whether or not I should just bite the bullet and upgrade entirely or just simply upgrade the GPU to a GTX 970.
Current Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7-3770 Ivy Bridge Quad-Core 3.4GHz (3.9GHz Turbo)
MOBO: ASUS P8Z77-V LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
GPU: GTX 770 (of course this is due for an upgrade)

Solution
Your i7-3370 can still handle the GTX 970 without bottlenecking in most games, so if you're looking for the most cost effective gaming upgrade for your rig getting the GTX 970 would be the way to go.

I'd second what glamdring said but remember the 970 isn't really a MASSIVE upgrade over the 770 AFAIK. You will get DX12 support though, which could be a big deal for you if you have switched or want to switch to Windows 10. I believe the upcoming Deus Ex game will utilize a lot of new DX12 features/effects but don't quote me on that.

Awesome, as of now the 1920x1080 comparisons of the 980 to the 970 are less than 8%, and considering the 970 is now 269$ on Black Friday I figured why not. In the meantime I'm sure a new generation of Intel CPUs will be way cheaper.

I'm still running Windows 8 lol but I also saw the ASUS Z170 Gaming MOBO was on sale for 114$ now, and my 750W PSU still has a 3 year warranty, couple that with a new 50$ 240 GB SSD and a 300$ Skylake/ GTX 970 or 980 and I've pretty much future proofed for another couple years... Just a hypothetical :)

But as of yesterday I checked the ASUS manager for the CPU and I'm still running 4.2Mhz, gutting it sounds great but then I look at the wiring and get a sick feeling in my stomach D: lol

I live in Europe so unfortunately we don't get those crazy Black Friday sales and I forget about them. If you can grab a 970 for 269 bucks, go for it I say, that is a great deal.

As for the CPU, well, you can probably hold off upgrading yours for another year easily. With any luck Zen will perform and sell decently which should put a little pressure on Intel to drop prices a little. That is what I'm praying for anyway. Tight or high budgets aside, IMO the prices for Intel CPUs at the moment are ridiculous.

In 2013 I paid 339$ for my Ivy Bridge, so I understand the pain lol. But at the same time I'm not utilizing 4K, multi-monitor setups, or anything above 1080, so that 1-3 FPS difference really isn't a deal breaker for me lol
