Explorer and power issues on a new build

Hi all,

I built a video editing / graphic design rig recently. Specs below.

The system has recently started to turn itself off (no BSOD, actually turns itself off neatly but without a command). This happened 3 times in the last week or so.

Two days ago, when opening a file in Photoshop, the "open file" screen refused to open, freezing the entire system. No BSOD, just full freeze. Figured this was an explorer problem, re-installed explorer. Worked for a bit then fell back into the same behaviour. Did a system restore to 3 days before this issue started. Worked fine for about 3 hours, had to restart, fine again but the problem randomly occurs now, sometimes right after a reboot, sometimes hours later.

And finally, the main reason for me to head over here and ask for some help: Today, after going into sleep mode, would not wake. Turned out the system had lost power. No fan activity, no LED activity. After turning the main power on and off it booted again. Where all the previous issues seemed software-related, this had me worried about the PSU.

Any help on these issues would be greatly appreciated!

KGius,

This is anecdotal, but over time, I've noticed quite a few problems / complaints with Windows hibernation. This seems to be worse on networked systems. Systems that won't "wake up" , won't start won't shut down, freeze, and when waking from hibernation, there would be a problem in a programme- in some way just refuses to work properly. The problem is apparently that the Hiberfil.sys file that stores the computer state when going to sleep in memory gets corrupted in some way. When the system is restarted, the file is erased and the Hiberfil.sys file restored, so it disguises the problem. This may have to do with the system going into hibernation when some kinds of tasks are running, for example, the system went into hibernation when Photoshop was auto-saving a file. - Just guessing, but it might explain the connection to Explorer.

You might start by changing the power option in Control Panel to "High Performance" and then in the left panel, the settings for "Choose when to turn off display" and "Change when the computer sleeps to: Never and Never.

If the bad behaviour disappears, then the problem is isolated. Then, perhaps googlize " hibernate troubleshooting " and there will be a lot of ideas on permanent fixes.

Personally, I just always leave the automatic shut down off and try to remember to turn off the system if it won't be used for an hour or more.

Let us know what happens.

Cheers,

BambiBoom

Thank you Bambiboom for the feedback.
As this is my GF´s system, I told her to turn off the hybernation before posting here, no problems have occurred since then. Will keep an eye on it to see if any of the issues return or if the hybernation is def. the problem causer.

The explorer issue started in PS, but when it happened all explorer tasks would freeze the computer, including just opening a folder. I´m sort of expecting that issue to return so will also run malware scan just to be sure.

Will post the results here next week if the problems remain gone, earlier if they return.

Thanks again!
