(re)build advice needed, smaller footprint, more power.

Hey all,

A few years ago I built a system with the below components. It has worked great over the last couple of years but is in need of a refresh.

The broad goal is to replace what is necessary to bring it up to speed so that I can max out modern games and get good frame rates.

I am also super keen to drastically shrink the footprint/size of the rig as I plan to keep it in my new lounge and am going for (if possible) a small quiet sleek look. Ideally gloss black to fit in with my Sonos kit.

Any help/suggestions on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated. The TH community helped me build this in the first place so I’m hoping it can help my PC graduate to 2015!

Case, Silverstone Fortress FT02B
PSU, 850w XFX Black
MOBO, Asus P8P67 Pro
CPU, Intel Core i7 2600K Unlocked Sandy Bridge Quad
Cooling, Megahalem RevB
Cooling, Scythe Gentle Typhoon
Ram, G.Skill RipJawsX 8GB
Optical Drive
Hard Drive, Western Digital 1TB
SSD, Intel 120GB ElmCrest
GPU’s, 2x XFX 6970 2GB

Ps, im not sure how relevant it is but I use a Benq w1070 projector as my monitor…

Thanks!

Well, I might just start over from scratch, excepting the RAM/SSD perhaps. That is only going to fit in a ATX case. So I assume you are going for a Mini ITX system. I would go for a Skylake i5 and a GTX 970, of if you want something really small and budget isn't an issue a Fury Nano.

Thanks a lot for your response, really appreciate it.

In your opinion is the hardware that out of date or is it more the need to reduce the size that is hindering the adaptability.

If I were to stay in the same size category what would you suggest I update to bring it up to speed? Im looking to max out Start Wars Battlefront when it comes out. I also play the Total War games and various shooters like Crysis 2 etc.

Well, Intel hasn't changed much from Sandy Bridge to Haswell as far as performance. Skylake is a relatively large step up. But really, it's the size of the motherboard that will be the issue. Since there really isn't any point in getting a new LGA 1155 motherboard, I would go for a new socket/CPU. But if you can find a cheap one, you could upgrade to an Ivy Bridge chip later and then to Zen, or Cannonlake, or whatever is out then. So it really comes down to how much you want to spend.
