I have a windows xp installed on a computer that I don't know any of it's drivers and there is no way I can know because all the boxes for the drivers are gone and all the cd's for the drivers aren't available. the windows doesn't operate cause system32\config\system is corrupted and the registry needs to be remade.. I can't make it because the windows cd isn't OEM which is regular and does not have the repair option.. can't even log on the command prompt cause safe mode with command prompt isn't working.. So I can't figure out the drivers from DOS. Is there any way to fix it from the same pc? or know what the drivers are so i can set them up if i install windows from this cd?

Once your new installation is complete, go into Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager then right click on the first entry with a yellow exclamation mark beside it, and go to properties.

Click the Details tab then scroll to HardwareIDs. Take note of the four characters which follow VEN for vendor and the four after DEV for device.

Using another PC, go to http://www.pcidatabase.com, input the DEV reference into the appropriate box and hit Enter. A list will show up - match the device to the VEN reference and click. A longer list shows up but sadly, not in numeric order so use your browser's Find facility (usually under the Edit menu) to find the device by typing in the DEV characters again. You'll then see links to the proper driver and the proper site - not a fake that only cons you. With luck you'll get an .exe file might it may also be a Zip.

You may need to do it to several devices, and also that some of the drivers available now may not be suitable for fourteen year old XP but that will get you up and running again.
