Hello, I am new here and fairly new to PC gaming (couple years). I am a complete noob as far as PC building even with hours of research this stuff just confuses me at the moment (I've been on only Macs since about 2005). I bought an older PC last year built in 2010 I think.. It runs all the games I play now pretty well and things like Skyrim on full graphics settings with no problems.

My point is I really want to upgrade but I don't have a lot of money to get things wrong so...I'd like to know what you would upgrade in order and what to. My goal is to run Fallout 4 at at least decent graphics. I am in school for Game Art Creation so I do care a bit about graphics.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz 2.40 GHz
RAM: 4 GB HyperX brand
System: 32-bit OS x64-based processor
MB: Asus P5N-E SLI with dual graphic card slots
Graphics: EVGA GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-Bit GDDR3
Power Supply: Coolmax CL-700B 700w
HD: 750 GB Western Digital Caviar Black

Please let me know if I need to add any information. I'm still really new to this!

Thanks so much!

If you have the funds to do so, yes. You'll have to also upgrade your RAM to DDR3 or DDR4 depending on which Intel socket you go for. I had that same board years back. Nice board but finicky with its DDR2 memory.

A new board will entail a clean install of the OS and re-activation with M$. And of course all your programs will have to be installed anew. As to the crashes, try running CCleaner and do the Clean and Registry portions both. It will clean up scads of software conflicts, registry errors, and other resource-wasting crap.

If you still have gfx card problems, try this... run DDU from safe mode. Have it uninstall any Nvidia and AMD gfx drivers it finds. Reboot and install the...

So would it be worth it to upgrade the MB, processor, and graphics at the same time? or would that cause problems with the other bits? I'm already having graphic card crashes occasionally, not sure if this has anything to do with it.

As old as that gfx card is, it is possible that the thermal paste between GPU and heat sink has dried out. Might clean the old off and replace it if temps are causing the crashes.
