My first time building a pc and i used to think usb ports had everything to do with motherboards until i went and looked for cabinets online. The reviews mentioned it had usb 3.0 ports in the front and i got confused then i searched online and got even more confused. Whats a USB header? Whats a USB controller? How do they both fit in on this? Does the motherboard have the usb ports or does the cabinet or do i need to connect the ports on the cabinet to the motherboard.
All i know about choosing cabinet is that it should support ATX motherboard. Please tell me everything you know about choosing the right cabinet.
The motherboard i am thinking of getting is a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3. Here's the link

From your manual:

South Bridge:

Up to 12 USB 2.0/1.1 ports (6 ports on the back panel, 6 ports available through the internal USB headers)

Etron EJ168 chip:

-Up to 2 USB 3.0/2.0 ports on the back panel

This means that he main USB controller is 2.0, so any USB header on the motherboard will provide throughput at USB 2.0 speed. The only USB 3.0 you have on your motherboard is the two blue connectors on the back of the I/O plate, which is controlled by the seperate Etron EJ168 chip.

If you buy a cabinet with USB 3.0 ports on the outer case you can still connect them to your USB 2.0 header on the motherboard, they will just be running at USB 2.0 speeds.
The USB ports on your cabinet connect to the USB headers on your motherboard via a cable.

The USB headers are simply the connection plugs directly on the motherboard that enable communication between the motherboard and outside USB ports of your cabinet.

So a cabinet that has USB 3.0 ports on the outside will need a motherboard that has USB 3.0 headers (which is the vast majority of motherboards nowadays).

The motherboard will have USB ports on the back input/ouput panel (on the back of the case) as well as various headers on the board itself that cables connect to and run to the front of the case, where the power, reset, hard drive light, power light, and USB ports are. It may also have an audio header so if the case has front audio jacks, you can connect headphones there.

Thank you all for replying but no one answered what a USB controller is cause my motherboards specs say it has a USB 3.0 controller but mention nothing of a USB 3.0 header only 2.0 headers.
