I have a router with a USB hard drive attached to it that I use for media backup/storage and DLNA streaming. My neighborhood has recently been experiencing brief power outages of 20 minutes or less. A couple times it did last several hours. Each time the power goes out the router and hard drive end up with problems and need reconfigured and rebooted. I am concerned about potential data loss from the hard drive so I would like to get a battery backup. I have done a little research and found some systems designed for PCs that can properly shut down a computer during a power loss. I am wondering if something like that would work for my router and hard drive. If I am away and lose power I would like for it to switch over to battery power, but then properly power down the router. I'm just wondering if anything like that exists or there is any way to set that up.

Yes ya can. We have the PC, monitor, modem, router, net connection, a complete high end 5.1 audio system with a 1200 W sub, receiver and other things, ext. hdd, ext. Blu-ray drive, a printer, a lamp and three power strips all connected to a UPS. An APC 1500 and the whole thing pulls about 230 Watts under normal use. When the PC shuts down everything shuts down. On startup everything starts up. All the stuff is protected this way as the system actually runs on the battery and not the grid. That is the main purpose of the UPS to protect everything from surges and spikes and power loss.. Also everything will stay running with a complete power loss of the grid for a while to run for a bit and/or let ya save files and shut down cleanly with a prolonged grid power loss.

The APC unit has a soft shut down time that is adjustable within the software so things don't slam off and screwing up everything. This is one of the many features that I wanted as well. All ya hafta do is plug everything into the UPS, modem, router and etc. I have been doing for quite a while and have tested the viability of this by dropping grid power and letting the battery run down til shut off. All is good.
Sincerely,

I'm confused about why you think that a router needs to have some sort of special power shut down and/or start up. I haven't experienced any problems of any kind by doing so on a daily basis.

Not on my X99 machine or for our i7 2600 machine or for the wireless connected Lenovo laptop. Our system performs flawlessly. Maybe there are issues with your equipment. See my above post.

You probably don't have storage attached to your router. I don't either, because I'd expect something like this to happen.

Most likely, there's something like a torrent client or backup continually writing to the drive, and it gets shut down in the middle of a write, which is bad. Your PC would likely have corruption issues if you repeatedly pulled the plug during normal use.

No, the UPS gives you a chance to cleanly shut it down, or even automatically tells the PC to automatically shut down cleanly.

As there's no way to shut the router down cleanly, it either gets an sudden shutdown when the power goes out, or (with a UPS), a sudden shutdown when the UPS runs out of battery.
