So this problem has occurred for quite a while. Every 00 minutes (e.g 3:00, 4:00, 5:00 etc) his computer will freeze up and have to be restarted manually. The issue can be fixed by setting the time backwards in the settings, but this has to be done every hour, meaning downloads, renders, whatever can't be left on overnight.

His specs are:

Windows 8 (maybe 8.1, he says he hasn't updated for a while)
CPU: i7, from sometime around 2013/14 (i don't have the full specs right now)
RAM 8GB
GPU: Nvidia Gtx 760 - EVGA
HDD: 1TB SSHD
Mobo: ASrock-something (again don't have full specs, will ask him when i can)
He has some sort of sound card that I'm not too sure about.

The computer has had a bit of a history of errors, and has had to be serviced and wiped multiple times.

I should be able to get any extra details you guys need regarding the computer.

maybe using event viewer will give an indication of the problem? type 'event' in start menu search and it should come up...expand 'windows logs' and have a look at the 'application' and 'system' sections right around a known shutdown time. hopefully, just before, there will be a notice of something failing. look for anything red (probably, you can ignore warnings and information notes)...error, critical error, etc.

good luck!

oh, run memtest x86 and check SMART status for the hdd. if you want to test windows, you can boot to ubuntu or something and try it for a day and see if problem still occurs (indicates hardware issue or low level setting).

lastly, you can get hwinfo or some similar tool and monitor sensor information...but if it goes for hours at a time (presumably, with heavy load at times) and the restart/lockup seems un-related, heat probably isn't an issue.
