Intel Core i7 4790K @ 4.00GHz
Haswell 22nm Technology
MSI Z97-G45 GAMING (MS-7821)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970

I want some decent ram for it, but the problem is that it seems that most of the ram I buy doesn't work for it. It's very fickle and it took me three times to find ram that would work. I got ADATA XPG V2 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900). It's not very fast and I want to upgrade to 16gb of ram that is duel channel.

What should I do? What ram will work with this setup?

Could run most any DRAM with your CPU, for most, (price to performance) best bet is prob 2133 or 2400 would look for 2x8GB in the GSkill Ripjaws X or their Sniper line - if budget allows, the Trident X line of DRAM is the best I've found for Haswell builds ;)

well to be honest ive never really checked the specs of RAM that much but seeing that this is a high end gaming motherboard you may need some high end ram. not really too sure about them but you can give the reviews on these two a look see.
theres the Kingston HyperX series dunno if youve heard of it and then there is HyperX standing alone by itself.

btw try sharing up the ram on your board if you didnt do it already it may help you get a little better performance, just look for the dimm label next to the ram slots they should be labelled like 'DIMM1, DIMM2'. that board has for sots so they should go up to 4...anyway hope ive helped at least :/
