Hello, I am a pupil of a technical school and we have computer networks as one of the subjects. Everybody told us (in classroom and in the labs) that we should leave first IP address for the gateway.
Now, I was wondering... Let's say we have an IP range 192.168.1.0/24. So standard IP range. They told us to leave the IP address 192.168.1.1 for the gateway, that got me thinking, like:
"Can Gateway be 192.168.1.0?" or "Can it be any other IP address? If we would put gateway on any other IP address would it work? Why?" and etc.

I would like to thank everybody that gets involved in this topic.
Thank you in advance and kind regards,

Solution
The .0 address usually denotes a full range, hence it is not used.
You can happily put any address, from .1 all the way through to .254 as your gateway. Standard practice just makes us put it at .1 or .2.

And there you have the more technical answer.
Thanks, Friday afternoons are lazy and we don't feel like being too technical :)
