Can I Reuse My Old CD/DVD Drive in a New Build?

One of my current computers is an old build with Windows XP. I’ll soon be building a replacement having an H-170 motherboard and Windows 10.

The old machine has a (generic) CD/DVD drive, seldom used for other than loading programs or burning a data disc, but important nonetheless. The old CD/DVD drive has a SATA interface and connects to the motherboard via a SATA cable.

I am currently purchasing components for the new build. While CD/DVD drives are only $20-25, it occurred to me that since my old drive is SATA and works perfectly well, why not transplant it from the old XP machine to the new Windows 10 machine? (I understand (but might be incorrect) that Windows will automatically go the Internet and find the correct driver.)

Am I looking for trouble here, and should just purchase a new CD/DVD drive? What if I later would like to install utility software such as NERO? Will the old CD/DVD drive now allow for the installation/operation of more-recent CD/DVD-related software?

Assistance appreciated. Thank you.
