in other words you don't know the answer to either question
The first question was not "what is soft off" it was "are these the only 2 options offered in the firmware interface that Asus ships with the Z97 Mark 2"?

The second question was not "what is the direct key function" it was (since I don't have the direct key button I have the direct key header pins that the reset button plugs into instead of the normal reset pins on the front panel header) it has been reported when using the (direct key) header pins the system does not function the same as when the direct key "button" is actually present.

Sorry for not being able to satisfy your curiosity.
1. I don't have the board and haven't read the manual, but I guess that you could do that or simply navigate through the BIOS settings.
2. Since the reset button is connected to the Direct key header, you could simply press it and see if acting according to https://www.asus.com/support/faq/1000990/ or not.
