I know a little about PC building but I am not comfortable enough to build my system without some good advice from this amazing community. I am planning on using my build for gaming but am not going to overclock any parts (as I want this system to last for longer, and be able to sell parts more easily when I come to upgrade). All peripherals and OS are paid for so should not be included in the budget. This is what I have so far:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (£169.48 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: MSI Z97-Gaming 3 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£89.99 @ Ebuyer)
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory (£33.80 @ Ebuyer)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£34.39 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card (£259.98 @ Amazon UK)
Case: NZXT S340 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case (£55.84 @ Ebuyer)
Power Supply: XFX 550W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply (£51.36 @ CCL Computers)
Total: £694.84

Looks good to me! I run a GTX 970, and like a lot of people, it's plenty of bang for the buck. Another option is the AMD R9 390 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127874), I looked into some benchmarking and in a lot of cases it slightly outpaces the 970. I might switch out the power supply for one that is modular, you'll be thankful to have less cables to deal with! You can shop around for one, I've never owned an Enermax but the price seems right and this one is Gold certified (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817194111)

thank you so much, you've been really helpful. I will definitely look into a modular power supply as, being my first build, cable management could get a little complicated. And I chose the 970 because it was only £4 more expensive with the twin frozr (and as my case has no front fans I thought it would be better for circulation (also in a couple of benchmarks I have seen, the R9 390 has higher average fps, but it also has a higher deviation in the fps achieved).
