does anyone think PC games will start having that dynamic resolution deal Halo 5 has?

Not that I own an XBONE,or intend to,ever since I heard of Halo 5 and its ability to downscale the resolution to maintain framerate at 60FPS,I have been wondering if PC games could be programmed to do that? I think it would be cool,I know a lot of PC gaming elitists would probably hate it,as they want the rendering detail to be insanely high and also have high FPS,but not everyone has 980ti's in their system. My PC (which sadly is packed up as I just moved across the USA and am still in a hotel) has a R9 380 and a R9 285 in crossfire. That is still a relatively beefy graphics setup but it still drops down in FPS at times. It would be cool for games to drop their internal rendering resolution to,say 900p (assuming you game at 1080p,like I do,due to me using a 1080p TV) in order to keep FPS high and then bring it back up to 1080p when things settle down, graphically. Is this even possible? I personally would love to see it become common,as I would rather the resolution detail drop slightly, which I probably wont notice in hectic moments where the FPS drops due to how much is going on such as explosions, grass and leaves swaying, etc,. This would be pretty cool to me,especially if it can be done to certain things, such as those explosions and such only, while leaving everything else alone, making little cuts in resolution here and there if needed,to keep FPS up. If this already exists in games or in drivers, forgive my ignorance, but I have never heard of the concept until Halo 5,though I have thought of it before.

Well, technically games can already do this with an Nvidia graphics card, but only for upscaling the resolution to one higher than your monitor supports.
But what you're actually describing sounds more like just using the right graphics settings more than changing resolution.

well,AMD does that too,I do it all the time with my Radeons. I guess what I was saying is a game that automatically changes itself and its settings to the situation, compressing and lowering the the detail of textures dynamically as needed to keep performance, not necessarily lowing the display resolution as that would cause blanks screens during game play. I would rather lose a little LOD and AA/AF for just a moment or two to keep FPS high, during a chaotic moment then have the FPS drop. Odds are, people won't notice a drop in detail/AA/AF for a few seconds while they are in a firefight and there are explosions and such all about,as they are focusing on the actual game and how to win. The thing that breaks the immersion is the sudden slow down that that action can cause, so the game can monitor the FPS and latency and when things get too low in speed, automatically drop some settings in things to keep the frame rate higher and once things settle down, bump it back up quickly before anyone can notice. It may only need to do it for a few seconds but that can mean the difference in having a firefight that stays 50 FPS or higher or having a sudden dip to 20 or 30 for a second. Having something that can avoid frame dips simply by dropping LOD and such, for just a short moment, would be cool.
