I have a WD 2.5 TB ext HDD being used as a backup. It is now full and I have a new 3 TB WD ext HDD I wish to replace it with. Do I just unplug the full one and plug in the new one or do I need to uninstall something first.

Welcome to the community, casho56!

Can you please give us more information about what you intend to do with the 2.5 TB external HDD? If you wish to have 2 off-site backup copies, you can simply plug your new 3 TB external and copy all the data you wish to transfer. Be patient, though, since 2.5 TB of data could take some time to transfer.
You don't need to uninstall anything, simply use the "Safely Remove" when you disconnect the 2.5 TB external drive.

Keep me posted if you have more questions! :)

G'day SuperSoph_WD
Thanks for your reply.
I'm new to this, so if my thinking seem dumb, please excuse me.
I was going to just put the full ext HDD in the cupboard and start with a new empty HDD, My understanding of how a ext HDD works is : that it fills up with all my files and folders then gets put aside and replaced with an empty one till it fills with new files and folders. So in theory (I believe), when the second drive is full, I will have about 4-5 years worth of files backed up should I ever need them. The full HDD took two years to fill up.I'm not after two off site copies, just the one.
Thanks for the tip about the "safely remove".
I originally had a techy install and set up the drive, but they now want $150, to do the same thing. I was hoping it could be done by a novice for a lot less. Since my computer is set up for a WD ext HDD, I was presuming I could just put in one of the same brand and it would automatically recognise the settings and continue to save files and folders for me. Or is this naïve thinking on my part?
Thanks again.
Cheers

Hey there again, casho56!

I understand now what you mean by unplugging the full one end plugging the new one! :) What backup software are you using, though? Since your computer is currently set to backup to a WD External HDD, you need to check in that backup utility that you use and make sure that your new external HDD is set as the destination storage for your copied files!
Once you do that, it should work the same way as your previous WD external drive!

Keep me posted, though!

Thanks SuperSoph_WD.
I presume that my backup software is that which came pre installed with the original WD HDD, and by my (il)logic the new WD HDD would have the same preinstalled backup program - albeit with a few tweaks since it is newer. If not, my computer (Gateway tower) is running Win7, so perhaps it is using Microsoft.
I will search my computer to see if this is the case.
Thanks again
Cheers

Hi again, Casho56!

It really depends on the model of the WD external HDD. Usually, our WD My Passport and WD My Book models come with the pre-installed WD SmartWare software. In case you have a different model like the WD Elements external drive, you'd need to manually install the utility.
Here's a link to the WD Software programs on our website, where you can download the tool for free: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=jhN1AQ

If you encounter any issues with the backup setup with your WD External, let me know!
Good luck! Hope I was helpful! :)

G'day SuperSoph-WD,

Thanks for the assistance. I am replacing a WD My Book 2.5 TB ext HDD with a WD My Book 4TB ext HDD.
(I originally thought it was 3TB, but it's 4TB).

Last question and I wont bother you anymore.

How do I "tell" (setup) the new drive not to copy all the files/folder that are already on the full HD being replaced?

In other words, I want to start backing up my stuff from time of installation (new stuff) and not all the old stuff I already have a back up of. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks again mate

Cheers

Hey there again, casho56!

Once unplug the full WD My Book from your system, you should be able to edit the settings from the SmartWare software, where you can simply set the destination for your backups to the new WD My Book 4 TB. :) If your old My Book is unplugged, there's no way for your system to keep trying to overfill the external HDD.

Cheers,
