CPU Temps Initially Good But Now High

I recently upgraded to a Noctua NH-D15 for my stock i7-4790K 4.0GHz CPU.

After applying MX4 thermal paste, the size of an uncooked grain of rice, I was receiving excellent temps. In Prime95 v26.6 on SmallFFT I was receiving 64c after 15mins. As you can imagine I was very happy with this.

A couple hours later I decided to give it another shot for some reason and now I was receiving much worse temps in SmallFFT at 73c. My ambient room temperature barely changed being in the mid-to-high 20c.

Anyone know what just happened or why this happened? Surely the thermal paste should still be working optimally like it was. Is it possible that the huge heat sink some how loosened after standing on it's side for a while and if so is this not a problem? Or is my CPU busted or something, is this an RMA concern I should be looking into?

im not 100% sure. maybe 1500pm-ish for load??? my cpu fan is jumps around 1000-1300 while web browsing. i can barely hear the fan. adjust the fan speed to your preference. every fan is different.

this is most likely not an rma issue. it is possible the block was not on as tight as you thought it was, or maybe you just need to repaste. but give it a bit of use first. it can take some time for the paste to settle in.

I promises you it was tightly on there. There's no way it could go on any tighter without causing damage. Also I understand paste sometimes needs time to settle, but surely I wouldn't have excellent temps for the first hour or two, and then suddenly have 10c higher until it settles back to the initial results?

this does seem a little odd. personally i use about twice as much paste as that, but repasting is all i can really suggest right now. it is not unusual to have a flubbed pasting. there are people that do it 20x to get it just right.

you're still within safe operating temperatures at least, but i know thats not really good enough when you put out the money for a better cooler.

Do you think the Noctua cooler is perhaps faulty?

probably the just heat in your case. save yourself some time and thermal paste. turn off your computer and let it cool down and try again later instead of taking things apart.

Already had it done by the time you responded.

I reapplied the paste and everything. Then ran Prime95 v26.6 SmallFFT for 15mins and got the following results.

Thoughts?
