I have a Dell desktop which had Vista installed when I bought it. I took Vista off and installed Win XP pro which worked fine for last 4 years. My hard drive has failed and my Win xp Pro disc doesn't work any more. My question is -If I buy a Win XP pro or Home OEM Disc- full version, will it install and work on my desktop?and if I get a new hard drive?

Solution

Assuming you can find a legitimate copy, with a legal activation key, then yes, it will work.

Thanks for your reply ex-Bubblehead. I think you could be right. As I recall the Win XP Pro disc I used to install Win XP Pro on my Dell desktop, had it's own activation key so it installed so installed OK on my Dell desktop. I also have a laptop with win 7 on it, but I want to fix my desktop sometime and want to put XP Pro back on it again. I may need to look for an OEM version of Win XP Pro or maybe Win XP Home, with its own product key and get a new hard drive and hope that will work. .

Hi ex-Bubblehead - I clicked on "best Solution" for your suggestion above, after I replied to your post. This is the first time I am posting here and I am not familiar with the setup and maybe I shouldn't have clicked on Best Solution, as I haven't tried your suggestion yet. If I shouldn't have clicked on "Best Solution" on your post, I apologize. I meant I thought what you said was something I am going to look into. sorry if I messed up.

To Abalcho - I already have a laptop with Win 7 on it which is fine for all the programs I run. know Win XP is an older version of Windows but I like it and we have a lot of older games which run better on Win XP which we sometimes play and it runs a lot of programs I still use. It is handy for my purposes. Of course I have to check win xp prices..
