Unless you're running professional level applications, there's little probability it would do you much good. I'd recommend installing an identical 4GB module in the second memory slot for a total of 8GB which should be sufficient for most any gaming or consumer applications. Plus, if your unit supports dual channel memory operation you'll want two compatible modules with very similar or the same specifications in order to take advantage of that. Using disparate modules, with one being 4gb and one being 8gb, will probably, almost certainly, not do that.
Dual channel operation doubles the effective bandwidth, which IS beneficial, whereas adding memory beyond what the system actually requires usually is not.
