GTX 970 or R9 390?

Need a new video card without spending 600+ $, using an i5 4690k

the r9 390 will get better frames in +1080p resolutions. but the gtx 970 is still the card to go to at 1080p

I'd say the R9 390 because of the larger VRAM pool. The whole 3.5/.5 GB thing on the GTX 970 is a pain. most new games need 4GB of VRAM at 1080P. I am a huge nvidia fan and it's still a good card but it's already kind of dated because of what they did with the VRAM. I know plenty of peeps who think the GTX 970 VRAM is not a problem, but i also know plenty who think it is. I leave it up to you.

the only game were I used more than 4GB VRAM was Ark survival evolved. but then again, that game is still poorly optimized and it realy doesnt give much difference.

Would you guys recommend any other cards that would be an upgrade without double the price? Or am I pretty much gonna have to stick around those 2 without spending 600 bucks.

For 1920x1080 60hz, the 970 is the better buy. For anything higher than that, the 390.

The power requirements between those cards is vastly different, so make sure your PSU is up to scratch before you buy.

Stick with the GTX 970 this card performs pretty much flawlessly at 1080p no point going above this at the current state of games.

maybe if you can get a good deal on the gtx 980(non ti), but last time I checked it was still to expensive for what it actually gives

^^ Agreed, if there is a huge price difference between the 980 and the 980ti then it maybe worth going the 980 but if not then there is no reason getting the 980.
