My current parts:

Case: Corsair 200R
Power Supply: Antec 750W Gold+
OS: Windows 10
CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5Ghz @ 4.5hz
CPU Cooler: CM Hyper 212 EVO
Mobo: MSI 970A-G43 ATX AM3+
Memory: 8gb DDR3 1600Mhz
Hard Drive: 1tb HDD 7200rpm
Video Card: AMD Radeon R9 270 2GB Gigabyte

1. I was planning on buying this an XFX Radeon R9 390 DD Edition GPU but am worried that the fx6300 will bottleneck it. Would it make more sense for me to buy an i5 4690k and a motherboard for about the same cost?

2. If I buy a gpu, would it make more sense for me to get a GTX 970 (around same price) because of better game optimisation?

Games I want to play:
CS:GO
Just Cause 3
Witcher 3

I play at 1080p and at least stable 60fps at high settings would be preferable.

My budget for upgrades is around £260, and I will likely be buying on Black Friday or during the sales.

(I will have another £250 to spend on upgrades in March but would likely buy a 144hz monitor unless I bought a CPU + Mobo now).

Thanks in advance,

I agree about upgrading the gpu first making the biggest impact. I even agree that many people are biased. I do NOT agree about going to watch youtube videos because most youtube videos are complete BS. I recommend looking at thorough reviews from trusted websites.

-Yes you would need ddr4 for Skylake.
-No I never recommend overclocking Intel. Waste of time and money.
-Any H97 motherboard for Haswell and any H170 motherboard for Skylake.
-The 390 may be cheaper then, but nvidia never lowers the price of their outgoing gpus much. They'll just stop making it.

Yes a FX6300 would bottleneck a 390 at least a little and in some cases a lot. I would also be surprised if your motherboard could run a FX6300 @ 4.5ghz under load without throttling. I would personally be looking to make the jump to Intel, but I would not get a 4690k. I would get an i5 4460 or 4590 if not one of the new Skylake locked i5s like the i5 6500 or 6600 and a H97 or H170 motherboard.

Yes a CTurbo said you will see a bottleneck with your fx6300,
a 4.5Ghz is a big overclock for an fx 6300, you should upgrade your mobo and cup
and go for a intel set up you will have better upgrade path plus better gaming experience,
you can get a stock intel chip what will out preform your FX6300, do some research and make your choice :)

Thanks for the quick reply, I have a few questions:

- Would I not have to buy more DDR4 RAM if I bought a skylake processor?
- Wouldn't it make more sense to get an unlocked processor and overclock it a reasonable amount if I had a decent mobo and a 212 evo?
- If I did buy a i5 4460 or even a 6500 could you recommend a decent mobo for the rest of the budget? (£260 - CPU cost)
- If I did buy one of the CPUs suggested and I upgrade again in March, do you think a GTX 970 or a 390 would be more sensible?

Thanks again,

Your FX 6300 will probably bottleneck a little. But you will still get more performance from Upgrading to a gtx 970 or R9 390 then upgrading to an I5 Processor. You will be able to play Witcher 3 on Ultra with an fx 6300 on 60 FPS. My recommendation is that you stop asking people you dont know and research yourself. People are very biased. Just go into youtube. There will always be gameplay videos showing the performance of hardware.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rutk9ErhKG4 WITCHER 3 ULTRA.

My recommendation. Get the GPU first and plan on CPU upgrade later, in 18 months you will probably get double performance on same price lol.

I do agree that many youtube videos are BS lol (For example gameplay on ultra with 120 fps but not telling you they are running the game on 720p). If you do decide to use youtube to check out hardware make sure that you stick with channels with loads of subcribers (That is a decent way to know if the channel is from a reputable source for example Linus Tech Tips or NCIX) and always check the description for any extra details that might not be present on the video. You can also use websites. Whatever you prefer.

Also Im not very familiar with that motherboard. But from what I did see that does not look like the motherboard that should be receiving such a nasty overclock. You should definitely turn down the overclock a little. The CPU might handle it or will just throttle but you might fry the VRMS on the motherboard.

I have an FX-6300 clocked at 4.8 GHZ and I'm seeing terribly low framrates with my R9 390. I can't get past 50fps on Hitman Absolution with AA turned off (1080p). On BF4, my framerate can spike down to 40fps and it's hard to maintain a constant 60fps. Do you think that this is a bottleneck, or should I look to RMA my card?
