Sharing an internet connection with a switch?

So, I have a computer and a PS3, i have a single RJ45 socket in my apartment and i would like both devices to have an internet connection simultaneously, i have no need for a LAN connection between the two.

So, would an ethernet switch work as my crude diagram here shows? The connection is 100mbps downstream and i am uncertain of the technology so i'd rather not get a router.

You need a router somewhere... so when you say you have the RJ45 wall socket.. what is feeding that?
if you have a router handling that.. then yes.. a switch or hub will be fine as you propose.. if there is a modem supplying that wall socket - you will need a router..
Basically - you need something to manage the two IP addresses for your PC and PS3.

Cheers

I live in an apartment and i have zero idea on the hardware behind that socket, basically i just plug my device in the port and "it just works", if i were to use a switch, would my devices get two separate external IPs? Or would there be an IP conflict?

Stop worrying it will work, I have my router going to that switch I linked then going to another router, No problems for over a year

ah, if it 'just works' when you plug into the socket then there is no need for a router (it sounds like there is already a router somewhere in the building managing the DHCP). another router on the line will just confuse the issue. grab yourself a non-gig 10/100 switch (your connection speed isn't fast enough for a gig switch) they're cheap, and setting them up is a snap (plug and a plug and play).
