My 1TB Samsung 840EVO SSD died and it is still under warranty.

I had a data recovery company take a look at the drive and was quoted 2200 and a 70% chance of retrieving the files. I passed as I didn't want to spend that much $.

Then a friend of mine said he wifes company could take a look at the drive and would do me a favor. They then said that the last data recovery company stripped the screws on the drive.

They would have to forcefully and manually open the drive casing to get to the chips.

My question is this, the drive is under warranty with Samsung, but in going through the warranty info it says that if the drive is opened they will not honor warranty.

Is this true? Are we not able open the drive to do data recovery on a failed hard drive? Am I stuck with either get a new drive and not go for data recovery or not get the replacement drive and go for the data recovery. Seems insane that Samsung or any manufacturer wouldn't allow you to try and save your data from their failed hardware. Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Call samsung and get permission to have the recovery company open the drive for data recovery purposes without voiding your warranty.
Most companies DO authorize this. I have yet to warranty with Samsung so I dont know for sure if they will or won't.
that's life

then do you know who striped the screws ?? are the 2ed guys just passing that off on the first to avoid liability ?

you really have no one to blame but your self - take your lumps and get a new drive and chalk it up to you'll know better next time

all Samsung is going to see is end user abuse =VOID

True. Screws could've been stripped or bad when I got the drive. I kind of doubt that first company stripped the screws considering they are in the data recovery business.

I will report back after I speak to Samsung tomorrow.

Confirmed with Samsung that as long as the drive was opened by a certified data recovery company, with either a sticker on the drive (seems to be common practice) or an invoice or some documentation of some sort that a data recovery was attempted. They will take back the drive and fulfill the warranty.
