970 its always better to run the best card possible before SLI or crossfire and you also don't encounter as many errors that way.

970, Sli from what im seeing has gave me problems in the past and i dont know if i wanna take that route again. I was dealing with micro stuttering, Some games not scaling all the way the should of been and with the 970 u will get its full gpu power and wont have to worry about heat etc...
