Know I have a dead battery on the controller - - - also had a dead battery when I set up my OpenMediaVault system and I was then able to set up the hard drives the way I wanted.

Pulled a hard drive from the array to use and now I cannot rebuild the array nor can I move in the HDDparm (IIRC that's what its called) screen for the array.

Its an old well used system - - - any ideas how to kick the BIOS in the pants to get this working?

(Maybe a dead perc5 card?)

Do you see the RAID BOIS boot up and search for the hard drives? If not then yes you may have a bad card. The dead battery shouldn't stop you from setting up RAID and accessing the RAID BIOS just you won't have any cashing features.

Do yo have an OS Install? If you do you can always boot to OS and install this.

The LSI Mega RAID Storage Manager. Works on all Dell PERC/HBA cards since they are all based on LSI chipsets and then manage the RAID from there.

Hmmmmmmmm - - - that could work if I were running windows except I'm running Debian stable and that makes it a little difficult to use windows files to access the hardware. I would like to upgrade the bios but then I would have to install windows on the machine - - - Win server is just a wee bit too pricey for that.

So your vote is for a dead raid (perc 5i) card?

Ah! Here then

32 bit http://docs.avagotech.com/docs/15.08.01.02_Linux-x86_MXM.gz
64 bit http://docs.avagotech.com/docs/15.08.01.02_Linux-64_MSM.gz

As far as upgrading the firmware and needing windows you can do this then this it is only temporary. You do need a windows PC setup to make this though and an extra external hard drive or thumb drive 32GB or larger. IF you use a flash drive it will be much slower mind you.

Download WintoUSB http://www.easyuefi.com/wintousb/
Download the latest ISO of Windows 10 from Microsoft. You want the ISO though.
Open WinoUSB, browse to the ISO, select what ever version of Windows 10 (I would say pro) then select your hard drive you want to install it to. This will install windows to a USB drive that you can use for the 30 day trial period you get. Boot off the USB drive and continue to run though the windows setup. Once in, download the firmware form Dell and update. Note: The firmware upgrade may delete all Virtual Disk made.

OR just remove the PERC Card, toss it in a windows machine if you have one, and then update.

Found that I wasn't doing things in the order that the raid card bios wanted things done.
Was able to get some tips from a server guru as to what to do first, second etc and then things were OK.

Thanks for the ideas.
