I recently upgraded to the Win10 offer from Microsoft. I been noticing 2 things since. I can't get into the bios using F2 since it doesn't recognize the USB keyboard. Up to that point, the Start switch is clear but after loading the bios and going into the OS it starts blink or is a steady Amber color. I ran Dell's Extended PC Doctor tests and everything passes. I changed the Cmos battery just in case but it was still over 3.12 volts. Dell doesn't offer any bios upgrades beyond Win7 which it came with. Would the Motherboard manufacturer might offer the new Win 10 bios possibly?? Am I on the right track here? Any thoughts? Thanks!

I wouldn't worry to much about being able to access the motherboard. Windows 10 lets you choose a different boot device, so that should eliminate you needing to access the bios. The light wouldn't concern me unless really weird stuff started happening. I think you will be good.

That system should be fine with Windows 10. Some motherboards give priority to certain USB ports. Can't remember off the top of my head. I believe it's the top left port. Try plugging it in the top left port looking from behind the computer. I would try each one if that doesn't work. Once your in the bios you will need to enable USB support.

Please click on the link below, and go to page 32 of your manual to read more about the light.. I would not worry about this to much if your pc is running ok.

Hello, the reasons I upgraded to Win 10 is that next November, Microsoft is going to end their support for Win 7 & Win 8.1. so as usual
were all are being pushed along to either upgrade or replace equipment. Understand I have almost a $2000 computer with some pretty impressive specifications even compared to todays computers. It's absurd to think a 5 year old top of the line computer is now deemed antiquated. I did try my lower USB port and on of the Upper ones off the Mother Board side without any luck. I didn't try them all, one by one, but I guess I'm going to have to try that method as you suggested(good suggestion) I also notice the older PS2 ports were also eliminated too, so that's disturbing as well .I'm thinking if I can't get into the bios and if there's no damage being done, I could live with it, but I always try to correct a condition. It's easy to see why Dell doesn't want to support it, since economically, they think I'm willing to plunk down another $2000 grand again. That helps their bottom line, but one of the reasons I went with a top-of-the-line computer was to stave off replacement in hopefully more than 5 years of service. So, I'm guessing the other suggestion of
the Mother Board manufacturer might have a newer bios upgrade available is out??
The other thing is that I read the Dell service manual as to what the flashing lights mean and their list of suggestions are way off.
When I was sold this computer, the original owner opted for a mix of cheap unknown ram totaling about 9 GB. Occasionally, I got the flashing Amber Light then. I searched their sight, the web and found no help then. After I started looking at the Mother Board carefully, is when I saw this odd ram. I took a chance and bought 24 GM of Kingston Ram and it immediately it eliminated the issues and boosted the systems capability overall. The Dell support was horrible then and now being out of warranty, it's not much better in my opinion. Those instructions they suggest are too broad to cover all issues and when I was talking to them that time, none of the techs suggested the ram was the issue. I believe they though it was a bad mother board, which it wasn't. Granted, todays systems are pretty complex, but diagnostics are always correct.in all respects. I've seen this with automotive diagnostics too. A technician has to rely on their experience and sometimes their gut to
test out possible cures. My gut told me it was ram then, and I was right.
Again, thanks for the input and all suggestions are welcomed!!

Thanks for the information! It sort of bugs me a bit. Dell offered this Studio XPS9100 in 2010 with Win7 and Win8 & 8.1 had to be 2 years later? Dell didn't even bother to upgrade the Bios to Win 8 or 8.1 either which in my book is a bit to much being greedy. I know Win 8.1 was and operates closer to Win 10, but if they had offered a bios it would have been nice.
I'll have to try my other USB ports like you said and I'll let you know if I get lucky. Again, thank you for your suggestions and have a Happy Thanksgiving coming!!!

You are 100% correct. It's all about greed, and the problem with greed is it's never full. Hope the USB ports work out for you. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Here is something really odd. I tried the different USB ports at the top of the Motherboard. There are 2 USB ports there.
The one closest didn't see the USB keyboard, but the one next to it did. I was finally able to get into the Bios pressing
"F2".
I had seen a updated bios offered at the Dell website. I could communicate with the bios until now. The Bios said I have I have "A04" installed. The update was for A04 so I'm guessing I had done it already. Then I exited the bios and it continued to boot. Once it got into desktop, I just happened to glance at the power switch. It was the steady clear color.
All I can think is when the bios couldn't see a USB keyboard, it got upset and was triggering the Amber color to flash or stay steady amber. I'm just guessing here but I'm happy to leave it alone. I was considering flashing the BIOS but it was
only meant for Win 7 only and I was imagining all sorts of problems with Win 10 being loaded already. All in all, very strange events, I figured I pass along. Thanks again!!

That is interesting. Yea bios updates are generally for new processor support, ram etc... You have the latest version from what you described. If you ever need to change your boot device, you can do that within Windows now. Can't remember if your motherboard supported UEFI or not, but other then changing the boot device to clean install Windows I think you are good to go.
