Hey guys, right now I have 2x4gb G.Skill ddr3 1866mhz and I'm planning on upgrading to 16gb in the future.
My motherboard is an Asrock z97 Extreme 9 and my CPU is an i5-4690k overclocked to 4.5ghz.

I am looking at a couple options, first option would be to get another two sticks of 4gb 1866mhz.

Second option would be to go with a faster set of ram. 2x8gb 2400mhz.

And third, I am thinking about getting the 2x8gb 2400mhz and running it with my other two sticks at the lower speed of 1866mhz for a total of 24gb. If it doesn't work I would just use the 16gb of 2400mhz

Would trying to mix them be a stupid idea?
I know that the speed of ram doesn't matter but getting a 2400mhz kit is tempting for some reason.

What would you guys recommend? I will never use 24gb but it sounds cool to have, and if it works why not have the extra memory, is my take on it. The difference between the 2400 and 1866 set is $32, not a big deal for me. I know that going with the 2 sticks of 8gb 2400mhz will provide future expandability but by the time I need 32gb we will probably be using ddr4 or ddr5 as the standard. Thanks guys, all options welcomed and appreciated :)

I'm not sure what you planning on using the system for, but 99% of people wouldn't even need 24GB. My personal recommendation is to just buy a 2x8GB kit and sell your 2x4GB. That's exactly what I did when I upgraded from 8 to 16GB recently. I had 2x4GB Kingston HyperX Genesis @1600MHz and bought an 1866MHz 2x8GB HyperX Fury kit. Just out of curiosity I did test to see if they'd work together running at 1600MHz even though I know I wouldn't need 24GB and my system wouldn't boot. My main assumption is that it's because the Genesis ran at 1.65v and the Fury is 1.5v. Ended up selling the 2x4GB kit on eBay for $52. Ended up working out that the 16Gb upgrade only cost me $19. Not once have I come close to using all 16GB either. Even before I upgraded, only rarely did I use over 90% and that was gaming while having countless browser windows and tabs open as well as a couple other things.

Yep mixing DRAM isn't a good idea, especially like with yours, 99+% of all DRAM runs based off XMP profiles, where the Fury line of sticks are based on PnP - can be a bear to set them up manually to play ;)
