Hi guys,

My 2 year old build has been working perfectly since I've built it and there have not been any issues since. No recent hardware or software changes. Yesterday, I plugged in my phone via USB cable into the front USB 3.0 port, the same way I have done in the last few years.

A few seconds after plugging the phone in, my computer just shut off. No distinct sounds or visual symptoms, it just died. My phone is fine but the cable I used (relatively new, no physical damage) no longer works with any power source.

The computer refuses to turn on and the only lights on the system were on the motherboard's power button and front panel power button. Pressing the power button on the motherboard or the front case does not work.

I have been unable to get the computer to turn on, POST or system beep. The power button on the motherboard glows a solid red.

I have read through some similar threads on this forum but none seem to match my issue exactly.

Here is the troubleshooting I've performed so far:

  • 1. Test PSU via paperclip method - attached two fans via molex adapters, work fine. Power readings are normal.

    2. Test with PSU from working unit - same results, no POST.

    3. Breadboarding - removed motherboard from case, placed on cardboard box, removed all but CPU and Heatsink/Fan combo, no change.

    4. Using paperclip method when 24 pin is connected to motherboard - GPU fans, case fans spin, Q code reads 00, still does not power, beep or POST.

    5. Clearing CMOS - removed battery overnight, cleared jumpers several times, no change.

    6. Shorting PWR_BTN + & GRND - touched both of these header pins with flathead screw driver, no change.

    7. Visual inspection of motherboard and all cables/peripherals - no burnt areas, no frayed or bent cables. Minimal dust, all channels clear.

    8. Motherboard standoffs tightened and aligned, rubber washers intact, CPU backplate set. No metal-on-metal contact visible.

    9. Removed front panel USB 3.0 cable from computer before performing all of the above.

I'm at the end of my rope trying to figure this thing out. I am going to disconnect everything and let it sit for a while, but please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help isolate the issue.

I am hoping that if the motherboard is dead, it did not take the CPU with it - I can't test the CPU in a different PC due to socket differences - is there any way to tell whether it's salvageable?

System specs:

Corsair Vengeance C70 Case
Intel i7-4770k
ASUS Z87-PRO
Corsair Vengeance 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 Kit (1600mhz)
Corsair TX750 750w Power Supply
EVGA GTX 760 4GB GDDR5
Samsung 120GB SSD
Seagate 2TB SATA Drive

Thanks for any help you guys can provide - I have never experienced this issue before and if I can't save the motherboard, at least I can learn from this experience.

Thanks for this info - I forgot to post it in the OP but I tried all four of the RAM channels with each of the RAM sticks I have, no dice. I checked the pins on the USB front header and the plugs, no damage is visible, but I just removed it anyway because that's what caused the problem. I'm not sure what else to do.

OP im experiencing the same issue with a z97 gaming 3 after having it for 4 weeks, seems to be the usb front panel doesnt pass the wake on test / prevents post for some unknown reason, simply ordered an anker usb 3 hub for a tenner and disconnected my R5s front usb panel and seemingly now works. I gave up trying to fix it / figure out the issue for the sake of a tenner vs taking my machine to bits to RMA
